Riding behind a team of huskies raises a fair question: how are the dogs kept? Here is what Finnish law requires of every dog keeper, what Levi's kennels state about their dogs, and the questions worth asking before you book.

What to know
Looking for ethical husky safari options in Finnish Lapland starts with knowing what is required by law and what is a kennel's own promise. Levi has a lot of dogs to think about: Visit Levi counts about 500 at the dog farms and kennels near the resort.5 Some of them are racing dogs, competing in international races as long as about 500 kilometres.6
No listing can show you a kennel's daily routine, but several things can be checked from home. Finnish law sets a baseline for every dog keeper. The kennels describe how they keep their dogs. And the listings carry rules that concern the dogs directly: weight limits, temperature limits, and what guests may and may not do around the teams.
This page separates those three layers. It does not rank kennels; we have not inspected them, and an outside review is beyond what a guide like this can do. What it gives you is the official framework, the kennels' own statements, and a short set of questions that a well-run kennel will answer without hesitation.

Finland's Animal Welfare Act sets the baseline. The Finnish Food Authority summarises it plainly: animals must be given sufficient water and appropriate food, kept in premises appropriate for the species, and their welfare must be checked at least once a day; inflicting undue pain and distress is prohibited.1 These rules apply to a large kennel of sled dogs as much as to a family pet.
Every dog is also on the official record. All persons keeping dogs in Finland have to register them in the Food Authority's dog registry, and a dog born in Finland after 1 January 2023 must be chipped and registered no later than 3 months after birth.212 Companies can register their dogs under their business ID.13
The registry gives the authorities a picture of who keeps which dogs, and it applies to the kennels behind every Levi husky ride. It is a minimum, not a seal of quality, but it means that a sled dog in Finland is never an anonymous animal outside the system.

Animals must be given sufficient water and appropriate food. Animals must be kept in premises appropriate for the species in question. The welfare of animals must be checked at least once a day.
Selling rides behind animals is regulated as an activity of its own. The Finnish Food Authority lists animal-assisted therapy, wellbeing or experience services among the activities that require a notification, alongside keeping companion animals professionally or on a large scale.15 Such notification-based activities must be reported to the Food Authority.16
Inspections do not wait for complaints. The Food Authority says an animal welfare inspection may be carried out even without probable cause where animals are kept professionally or on a large scale, and it names kennels among those places.3 Municipal veterinarians and state veterinarians are among the authorities that enforce animal welfare.17
If you see something that worries you, you can act on it. Anyone can file an animal welfare notification about an animal they suspect is ill-treated or neglected.18 The local veterinary inspector is the authority to contact, and a calm, specific report of what you saw is the most useful kind.19

Several kennels near Levi describe their dogs on the resort's official service directory, and their statements are worth reading as statements: the kennels wrote them. All Huskies, based in Kittilä, says its dogs are Alaskan huskies, that their welfare is of prime importance, and that they get high-quality food, heat-insulated dog houses, individual care and exercise all year round.4 It runs kennel visits in summer and autumn and training tours on an ATV pulled by 16 huskies from the beginning of September to November.8
Maglelin, 25 km north of Levi near Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, describes itself as home to a pack of Alaskan huskies and two humans, and says it takes part in sled dog races every winter.202122 It offers programmes of 10 km, 20 km and 35-40 km.23
On GetYourGuide, Keo Wilderness lists ethical animal care, with a no-kill policy and well-treated dogs, among the inclusions of its 5 km ride. This site's 7 km safari includes an introduction to the huskies before the run. Use that time to ask about the dogs' lives: a guide who loves the team will tell you more than any listing.
Weight limits are the clearest example. Keo Wilderness sets 95 kg on its 5 km ride, Levisafari 140 kg on its 5 km ride, and several others fall in between. On Apukka's ride near Rovaniemi, the guides allocate guests to the sleighs to keep the load even for every dog team. Accept these rules without argument; they are part of running a team responsibly.
Cold is the second. Both Keo Wilderness and Lovimainas name -30°C as the point at which a ride can be moved to another day or refunded. This site's safari runs rain or shine and is cancelled only for extreme weather such as storms. In both cases, a guide's decision to call off a run on a dangerous day is one to welcome.
Then there are the rules for guests. Keo Wilderness does not allow feeding the animals on its rides, and Bearhill's ride at Santa Claus Village bans drones. Follow the guide's lead on petting, too: ask before you touch a dog, keep away from harnesses and lines, and let resting dogs rest.
Sled dogs work in seasons. Visit Levi notes that the huskies can be met in summer, when guests can join a hike with a husky.7 When the weather turns colder in autumn, sleigh programmes start again and guests can help train the dogs on husky safaris on wheels.24
The first snow usually falls on Levi in mid-October, by Visit Levi's account in the second or third week, and the sleds come out after it.9 All Huskies lists its 15 km safari as suitable from November to April, and in the long days of spring two-day husky safaris become possible.1011 Through the winter, the racing kennels also compete.22
Knowing this rhythm helps you read a kennel. Dogs that run in harness through the winter and train on wheels in autumn are working athletes with a year-round routine. A summer visit, when the dogs are off the trail, is a good way to see how a kennel looks when nobody is selling a sled ride.
Ask how many dogs run in a team and how often each dog works in a day. Ask what happens to dogs that retire from the trail. Ask how the dogs are housed in deep winter, and when they rest. A kennel that cares will have clear, unhurried answers, and many will tell you before you ask.
Look for the details a kennel chooses to publish. All Huskies writes about its dog houses, food and year-round exercise; Keo Wilderness names a no-kill policy in its inclusions.4 Silence is not proof of a problem, but a statement in writing is something you can hold a kennel to.
On the day, watch the dogs. Visit Levi describes an enthusiastic team that guarantees speed when conditions are right, and an eager, noisy start is normal.25 What should give you pause is a dog that is limping, kept away from the team without explanation, or handled roughly; in that case, tell the guide, and if needed, file a notification afterwards.18
