Three lengths of ride, many kennels

Choosing a husky tour in Lapland gets easier once you know how Levi's offer is built. Visit Levi says safaris of several lengths run every day, from a shortest ride of about 2 km up to full-day trips of about 30-40 km.1 The listings you can book on GetYourGuide sit at the short end of that range, grouped around 2 km, 5 km and 7 km, plus a 15 km safari for people who want more time on the runners.

Behind those rides are a lot of dogs. The tourist board counts about 500 of them at the dog farms and kennels near Levi, and some race internationally, on courses as long as about 500 kilometres.23 Each kennel runs its own trails and its own format, and that matters more than the distance on the title. A 5 km ride with a van transfer and a kota break is a different afternoon from a 5 km ride where you drive to the farm yourself.

The questions that separate one ride from another are simple. Do you drive or sit? Is transport included, and from where? Is winter clothing part of the price? How long is the whole outing, compared with the time on the trail? The sections that follow answer those for each length, using only what the listings themselves state, and the comparison table puts the main figures side by side.

The 7 km safari

How the 7 km ride unfolds

  1. Pickup

From a set point in Levi

Transport to the start is included from set locations in Levi.

  2. Kit and briefing

    Clothes, then dogs

Winter clothing, an introduction to the huskies and a sledding briefing.

  3. First half

    One of you drives

Two people share each sled, one on the runners.

  4. Halfway

    Swap places

The driver can switch halfway, and the listing mentions a photo stop.

  5. After the run

    Warm up

Warm drinks and cookies, then the drive back to your pickup point.

The 7 km self-drive safari

This site's main tour is the 7 km ride run by Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park Levi. The listing makes you the musher: each sled carries a team of 2 people, and the driver can switch halfway through. Before the start there is an introduction to the huskies and a briefing on sledding, and the guide leads the group on the trail. The listing also mentions a stop for photos along the way, which is when the passenger gets the best chance at pictures of the team.

What makes it easy to plan is how much is folded into the price. Pickup and drop-off from set locations in Levi are included, and so is winter clothing, with warm drinks and cookies after the run. The whole outing lasts 3 hours, the guide speaks English, and the ride goes ahead rain or shine; only extreme weather such as a storm cancels it, with a full refund. Bring an ID card, or a copy of one, as the listing asks.

It starts from $230 and is rated 4.68 from 502 reviews. As a husky ride in Lapland it sits in the middle of Levi's price range, above the 2 km and 5 km rides and well below the 15 km safari. Two things the listing does not state are a time of day and any age or weight limits, so ask the provider about both before you book if they matter to your group.

Three ways to ride 5 km

Three 5 km listings are bookable in Levi, and they differ more than the distance suggests. Keo Wilderness meets guests at a black minivan in front of Burger King Levi, drives 10 minutes to Rautusjärvi and spends 1.5 hours there with the dogs and the sled before the drive back. It is the most reviewed husky ride in this comparison, rated 4.78 from 594 reviews, from $173. Winter clothing is not part of it, and the record tells guests to come in warm clothes and shoes of their own.

Lovimainas runs a self-driven 5 km ride from the Levi Tourist Office, with a van of 10 minutes each way and a guided tour of 2 hours, plus a kota to warm up in. It is rated 4.60 from 147 reviews and starts from $172. Both of these say a day at -30°C or colder can mean a rescheduled ride or a refund.

The third, at Levisafari & co, is the one you reach on your own. There is no transport: the meeting point is the farm at Kurjennivantie 118, and the guided tour lasts 75 minutes inside a 1.5-hour visit with a kennel visit, hot berry juice and stories about farm life. Groups are limited to 8, instructors speak English, French, Finnish and Swedish, and it starts from $173. With a rental car, it is the most flexible of the three.

The 2 km rides: a short run or a passenger seat

The 2 km rides suit a tight schedule or a first try. Keo Wilderness has one where a professional musher drives the sled and you ride, with a 15-minute transfer each way, 40 minutes at Rautusjärvi, a heated shelter and hot drinks with cookies. It is limited to 9 participants and rated 4.40 from 109 reviews, from $121. It is the one to pick if nobody in your group wants to steer.

Levisafari's 2 km ride takes the opposite approach: you drive yourself, and the listing rules out both a guide driving guests and a sleigh for one person. The farm is about 15 km from central Levi and no transport is included, but it is the cheapest husky ride here, from $110, rated 4.53 from 80 reviews. A second Keo Wilderness listing offers a 2 km ride with pickup, a guide and a kota, at the same from-price as the musher-driven one.

One more listing, by Easy Travel, lets you choose 2 km or 5 km and includes hotel pickup and a safety briefing. Two details set it apart: thermal outerwear is not included, and free cancellation runs up to 2 days before rather than 24 hours. Read the option you pick at checkout carefully, since the price changes with the distance.

Further and later: 15 km and the evening ride

If 7 km sounds short, Polar Lights Tours runs a 15 km self-drive safari. The itinerary lists a 15-minute safety briefing and 1.5 hours of guided tour, with local snacks afterwards and a bus from Levi centre at both ends, 3 hours in all. It is rated 4.75 from 22 reviews and starts from $424, close to double the 7 km ride. Children under 4 cannot join.

The same company sells an evening husky ride under the northern lights, a 2-hour outing with 1 hour of guided tour, from $334. It has only 3 reviews and a rating of 4.00, too few to judge it by, and no tour can promise the aurora itself. Treat it as a dark-sky husky ride, and count any lights in the sky as a bonus.

Longer still, Visit Levi points to two-day husky safaris in the long days of spring.10 A newer 7 km listing from Wonderlapland includes a kennel visit and musher instructions over 4 hours, but charges extra for the winter overall and snowboots and has no reviews yet. Without reviews, the established 7 km safari is the safer pick for the same distance.

Getting to the kennel and dressing for it

Transport is the quiet difference between these rides. The 7 km safari collects you from set locations in Levi. Keo Wilderness gathers its guests at the minivan in front of Burger King Levi, while Polar Lights Tours meets at Hissitie 11, next to the Kotipizza restaurant, with a marked bus or taxi. Levisafari's rides start at the farm itself, without a transfer.

Clothing is the second difference. The 7 km safari includes winter clothing, while several cheaper rides expect guests to arrive in their own warm gear, and Easy Travel lists thermal outerwear as not included. If your own coat is a city coat, add a rental set to the cost of the cheaper rides before comparing prices. Our page on what to wear in Levi covers the rental in detail.

Then there are the small rules. Keo Wilderness asks guests to be at the minivan 10 minutes early and gives no refund for late arrival. Several rides list weight limits, from 95 kg on two of the Keo Wilderness rides to 140 kg at Levisafari's 5 km ride. Check the listing's suitability section before you book if anyone in your group is close to a limit; it is a firm rule, not a guideline.

Booking ahead and keeping it flexible

Visit Levi calls husky safaris possibly the most booked activities at the resort and advises booking well in advance.11 That matters most around the holidays, when a family needs several sleds on the same departure. Booking early costs little in flexibility: all of these listings but one refund you fully if you cancel a day or more ahead.

Most of them also carry the reserve now and pay later option, among them the 7 km safari. The exception on cancellation is Easy Travel's ride, with its 2-day cut-off. For a trip planned around a fixed week, the sensible order is to book the husky ride first, then fit skiing, the spa and the rest of the week around it.

Finally, think about what you want to remember. If it is the feeling of driving a team, choose one of the self-drive rides and the longest distance your budget allows. If it is meeting the dogs, a shorter ride with generous kennel time may be the better deal. If it is a calm ride for a nervous passenger, the musher-driven 2 km ride is the gentle option.
