A farm visit instead of a sled ride

A husky farm in Levi is the gentlest way to meet the dogs, and Polar Lights Tours sells a visit built around exactly that. In 1 hour, a guide shows you around a farm with Alaskan huskies, Finnish horses and domestic reindeer, and the visit ends with juice and cookies. There is no sled and no speed, just time with the animals.

It is also the cheapest way to spend time with huskies near Levi, from $34. That makes it a good fit for small children, for anyone with a back that cannot take the jolts of a sled, or for a quiet first meeting before you book a ride later in the week. Guides speak Finnish and English.

Go in with the right expectations. The listing has only 12 reviews and a rating of 4.13, too few to say much about. Read the most recent reviews before you book, and treat the visit as a relaxed hour on a working farm rather than a show. Ask the guide questions as you go: how the dogs are trained, how a team is put together, how the horses and the reindeer spend their winter. A guided farm tour is a good setting for that kind of conversation, and the answers make any later sled ride more meaningful.

What the farm visit includes, and what it leaves out

The farm visit's record lists a guided tour of the farm, the chance to meet and interact with the huskies, Finnish horses and reindeer, and refreshments of juice and cookies. Plans can change without cost until 24 hours before the visit, and payment can wait until later.

Transport is not included, and neither are meals. You meet at a parking area at Muoniontie 955, where the guide picks you up. Without a car, a taxi is the simple answer: Visit Levi says taxis in Levi run around the clock.2 Agree on a pickup time with the driver for the way back.

A few rules apply. The visit is not suitable for people with animal allergies, and pets and smoking are not allowed. Bring comfortable shoes and warm clothing, since the tour is outdoors. In midwinter that means full winter layers, mittens and a hat, even for a short walk around the enclosures.

Sled rides that include kennel time

If you want both the ride and the kennel, several Levi listings combine them. Levisafari's 5 km self-drive ride includes a visit to the kennel, hot berry juice and local snacks, and stories about life at the farm, in a 1.5-hour visit. Polar Lights Tours' guided self-drive tour lists a kennel visit and hot juice with a snack.

Keo Wilderness builds interaction and photo time with the huskies into its 5 km ride at Rautusjärvi, and its musher-driven 2 km ride includes time to meet and photograph the dogs. Polar Lights Tours' guide-driven safari has a kennel presentation. This site's 7 km safari starts with an introduction to the huskies before the run.

How long you actually spend with the dogs differs, and listings rarely put a number on it. A short ride with a long stop can give more time with the dogs than a long ride with a short one. If the dogs matter more to you than the trail, ask the provider how long the kennel part lasts before you choose.

I tried husky sledding in Lapland, Finland: was it worth it?

Summer and autumn at the kennels

The kennels do not close when the snow melts. Visit Levi notes that you can meet the huskies in summer, and you can even go for a hike with a husky.1 All Huskies, a kennel in Kittilä, organises kennel visits in summer and autumn.9 A summer visit shows the dogs off duty, which is a different and calmer picture.

Autumn brings training. When the weather turns colder, sleigh programmes start again, and guests can help train the huskies for winter on safaris on wheels.10 All Huskies runs such training tours on an ATV pulled by 16 huskies from the beginning of September to November.9

Whatever the season, book ahead. Visit Levi reminds visitors that kennel visits need to be booked in advance, just like the sled rides.10 Kennels are working places, and an unannounced visit is unlikely to get a welcome. Booking also lets the kennel plan the day around the dogs' training and rest, which is in everyone's interest.

Finding the farms

Levi's kennels lie outside the resort, along the roads into the forest. The horse and husky farm meets at Muoniontie 955, and Levisafari's farm, at Kurjennivantie 118, is about 15 km from central Levi. Neither includes transport, so plan the drive or a taxi.

Other kennels collect you in Levi. Keo Wilderness drives its guests from Burger King Levi to Rautusjärvi, and Polar Lights Tours runs a bus from Hissitie 11, next to the Kotipizza restaurant. This site's 7 km safari picks up from set locations in Levi.

Kennels further out are part of Levi's offer too. Maglelin is 25 km north of Levi, near Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, and includes the transfer from Levi in its safari price.1112 All Huskies includes transfers from Levi and back on its programmes.13 If you want a kennel deep in the forest, those are the ones to look at.

Good manners around a pack of huskies

Sled dogs are friendly, but a kennel is their home and their workplace. Follow the guide: some dogs love attention, some are resting, and some are being prepared for a run. Keo Wilderness lists feeding animals as not allowed on its rides, and the same rule makes sense everywhere.

Keep hands away from harnesses, lines and gates unless you are asked to help. Do not let children run between the dog houses, and crouch rather than lean over a dog you are meeting for the first time. Leave your own dog at home: the farm visit does not allow pets.

Photography is part of the fun, and most kennels build time for it into the visit. Keo Wilderness's 2 km ride, for instance, includes time to meet and photograph the huskies. Turn off the flash near the dogs, and in the cold, keep your phone in an inside pocket between pictures. The best shots are often the quiet ones: a dog resting in the snow, a guide checking paws, the steam of breath in low winter light. Take a few, then put the phone away and simply spend time with the dogs.

Which visit to choose

For a family with small children or anyone who prefers to stay on their feet, the 1-hour farm visit is the straightforward choice, and it adds Finnish horses and reindeer to the huskies. For a first ride with a proper look behind the scenes, Levisafari's 5 km ride with a kennel visit is a good balance.

If driving matters most, take the 7 km safari and use the introduction and the time after the run to meet the dogs. It starts from $230 and is rated 4.68 from 502 reviews.

And if you are in Levi outside the snow season, ask the kennels about summer visits or autumn training on wheels.110 It is a fine way to see the dogs as they really live, without the bustle of the high season.
