Children usually ride in the basket while a parent drives, but every Levi kennel writes its own rules. This page sets out who can join which ride, from babies on laps to the weight limits for grown-ups.

The short version
Planning a Lapland husky safari with the family starts with the small print: Levi's kennels do not share one rule. This site's 7 km safari puts 2 people on each sled and states no age or weight limits in its record, so ask the provider before booking with a toddler. Keo Wilderness's 5 km ride at Rautusjärvi is not suitable for children under 4, and Polar Lights Tours sets the same limit on its 15 km safari.
Other rides start younger. Easy Travel's 2 km or 5 km ride says infants must sit on laps, and it does not accept unaccompanied minors. Levisafari's 5 km ride and Keo Wilderness's 2 km wilderness ride rule out only babies under 1 year. Those are the listings to look at first with a very small child, as long as a parent is happy holding them in the basket.
Read the suitability section of a listing with care, and then read it again on the booking page for your date. It lists who the ride is not suitable for, and it is the one part of a listing that a kennel treats as a hard rule. If a line is unclear, message the provider through GetYourGuide before paying; a clear answer in writing saves a disappointing morning at the kennel.

Say who rides and who drives before the sleds are loaded.
On a Lapland husky safari with children, the usual arrangement is simple: a parent drives and a child sits in the basket. A Rovaniemi listing puts it in so many words, with 2 adults per team and children in the sleigh. On this site's 7 km safari the sled takes a team of 2 people, and the driver may switch halfway, which leaves room for a parent to drive while an older child rides.
A young passenger sits low and holds on, wrapped up against the wind. Tell the guide the child's age at the start: guides decide how sleds are loaded, and on the Apukka ride near Rovaniemi they assign people to each sleigh to keep the load even for the dogs. An odd-numbered family may find itself split across sleds, with a guide's help to keep everybody together.
The passenger seat is the best place for a child to watch the dogs work. Tails up, ears forward, the team runs a few metres in front, and the snow hisses under the runners. Point out the guide's signals and the dogs' names if you learned them at the briefing; children who know what is happening are much happier in a fast sled.

Decision helper
Start from your youngest or oldest traveller
Infants sit on a parent's lap.
Not suitable under 4, so 4 and older can join.
Its age line is over 75, and a musher drives.
Huskies, horses and reindeer on foot, 1 hour.
2 per sled with a swap halfway; ask about age.
The price includes outdoor clothes which are provided in adult sizes. The outdoor clothes that we provide include a winter coat and winter trousers, shoes, mittens, and a hat.
The driver of a husky sled has to brake and balance for the whole run, and the question of who drives deserves more thought than who rides. This site's 7 km listing says only that each sled is driven by a 2-person team with a swap halfway, without naming an age for drivers. Ask the provider before the day if a teenager wants a turn on the runners, and accept the guide's call at the kennel.
Some rides take the decision away from you. On Levisafari's 2 km ride you drive yourself, and the guide never drives guests. On Keo Wilderness's musher-driven 2 km ride, a professional musher drives every sled. Between those two lies the guided self-drive format, where a guide leads and a guest drives each sled.
Before letting an older child drive, be honest about their strength and their patience. The work is mostly braking, and a child who cannot hold the brake down on a descent should ride rather than steer. A first family ride on a short trail, with a parent on the runners and the child in the basket, is the easy way to find out who loves it.

Age rules work at both ends. Keo Wilderness's 5 km ride is not suitable for people over 70 years, and its musher-driven 2 km ride sets the line at over 75. Grandparents coming along should check this before the family books a single departure for everyone.
Weight limits are the other line. Keo Wilderness sets 95 kg on both its 5 km and its musher-driven 2 km ride, and 100 kg on its 2 km wilderness ride. Levisafari allows up to 135 kg on its 2 km ride and up to 140 kg on its 5 km ride. Read a weight limit as applying to each person on the sled.
Health lines appear too. Pregnancy rules out Levisafari's rides and Easy Travel's ride, and back problems, heart problems or high blood pressure appear on several lists. People with animal allergies are excluded from some rides and from the farm visit, which is worth knowing for a family with one allergic member.
Families with a nervous child or a grandparent who should not stand on the runners have three easy options. The first is Keo Wilderness's 2 km ride, where a professional musher drives and you ride, with a heated shelter and hot drinks afterwards. It takes 1 hour from the minivan in Levi and back.
The second is Polar Lights Tours' guide-driven safari: the guide drives, warm blankets are provided, and there is a kennel presentation with hot juice and a cookie. The listing gives 1 hour of guided tour, with a 15-minute bus each way from Hissitie 11 in Levi. Its record names no distance.
The third leaves out the sled altogether. A farm visit near Levi introduces Alaskan huskies, Finnish horses and domestic reindeer in 1 hour, with juice and cookies, from $34. You reach it on your own: transport is not included. For a small child, meeting the dogs on foot can be the best part of the trip.
A child in the basket sits still in the wind for the whole run. This site's 7 km safari includes winter clothing, but its record does not list children's sizes, so check with the provider. Maglelin, a kennel north of Levi, provides outdoor clothes in adult sizes only.5 For small children, a rental set is the safe plan.
Winterent's Levi store rents kids' overalls from 90 cm to 135 cm, and gloves and shoes from EU23 to EU35. Each traveller's height, weight, shoe size and age are taken in advance, and the clothes are prepared before you arrive. Base layers are not part of the set, so pack wool for underneath.
Visit Levi's own dressing advice works for children too: a hat over the ears, a tube scarf for the face, wool socks rather than cotton, and loose mittens with thin gloves under them.3624 Add a spare pair of mittens in your pocket, and check small fingers and cheeks at every stop.
Book the ride before the rest of the week. Visit Levi calls husky safaris possibly the most booked activities, and a family needs several places on the same departure.1 Free cancellation up to 24 hours before keeps the plan flexible on this site's safari.
Think about the length of the outing, not only the trail. This site's safari takes 3 hours from pickup to drop-off. With small children, a 1-hour ride and a separate farm visit may suit better than one long outing, and a 7 km safari is a better fit for children old enough to enjoy the whole morning or afternoon in the snow.
And if winter does not fit the family calendar, the dogs are still there. Visit Levi notes that you can meet the huskies in summer too, and even go for a hike with a husky.7 It is a gentler first meeting for a child who is unsure of big dogs, and the same kennels run sled rides again once the snow returns.
